Course Information
Content Level:  Advanced
NAPFA Subject Area: K - Marketing and Practice Management
Course Description

Many NAPFA firm owners find themselves time constrained. They desperately need help, but don’t know where to start. Do they hire a new team member or outsource some tasks to a professional back office firm?

This session will review the menu of options to consider when looking for help. If you want to hire a new teammate, attend this session to learn where to look for candidates, how to set them up for success to thrive at your firm, and the special steps needed to ensure your team members feel safe bringing their 100% authentic selves to work every day.

In addition, by the year 2050, the United States is projected to be a minority majority nation. To serve this changing landscape of clients, it is imperative that an advisor’s practice looks more like the population it will serve. Presenters Shawn and Luis will share the best practices they have learned through the BLX Internship program about the areas to consider if you are looking to hire a candidate with a diverse background.

Learning Objectives
  1. Learn where to find candidates from diverse backgrounds
  2. Determine how to onboard candidates to make them feel safe to bring their 100% authentic self to work every day
  3. Discover best practices from the BLX Internship Program about how to run an internship program at your firm
Speaker

Shawn Tydlaska, CFP, MBA

Shawn Tydlaska is a CFP® professional and holds an MBA from the University of Michigan - Ross School of Business. He also holds a BA in Economics and a Minor in Education from UCLA. He is a co-founder of the BLX Internship Program, an internship program designed for aspiring Black and Latinx financial planners to get their first job in the financial planning field

After graduating from UCLA, Tydlaska was unprepared to manage his own personal financial life. Credit scores, 401(k)s, and budgeting were all foreign concepts and he felt overwhelmed. When he started to learn how to best manage his own finances, he was immediately hooked. He knew he found his professional calling to help others achieve the same sense of empowerment he felt when he took control over his finances. Tydlaska launched Ballast Point Financial Planning in 2016 to help his clients achieve their financial goals and dreams.

Tydlaska is an avid runner and has finished the Boston Marathon seven times. He loves camping with his wife, son, daughter, and their beloved cavapoo named Coop.

Luis Rosa, CFP, EA, J.D.

Hola, me llamo Luis Rosa! Rosa came to the U.S. at age 11 from the Dominican Republic. He was inspired his parents to work hard and pursue an education. However, Rosa was not taught about personal finance at home or at school and had to learn the hard way.

Rosa became a CFP® professional in order to help others pursue their goals. He does his best to keep it simple, so no fancy jargon or investment terms. It’s all about a client’s vision of success and how he can help them on their way to building a better financial future. In 2020, Rosa launched Build a Better Financial Future, LLC to focus on helping his clients with financial planning, investment management, tax preparation and planning in a comprehensive manner.

Rosa is very active in the profession and helps young and diverse planners enter and succeed in the industry. He is co-founder of the BLX Internship Program, an internship program designed for aspiring Black and Latinx financial planners. Additionally, Rosa is one of the few Spanish-speaking CFP® professionals in the country and aims to help those seeking true guidance. He serves as a CFP Board Ambassador and a board member on the CHIP Professionals Advisory Board.

Rosa currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Alison. He lived in New York for the majority of his adult life and currently travels there throughout the year to visit family and existing clients. When not helping a client, sharing financial insights on the On My Way to Wealth Podcast, volunteering, or hosting an event, you can find Rosa eating at one of his favorite Vegan restaurants, visiting a beach, or walking a trail in the Los Angeles area.
