In this session, Dr. Matt J. Goren, CFP® will discuss the issues facing mixed nationality couples where one spouse or partner is a U.S. citizen or green card holder and the other spouse or partner is a non-U.S. tax resident (aka “nonresident alien”). The major issues and considerations include legal vs. tax residency, tax treatment of non-U.S. citizens, situs of assets, source of income, and the consequences of being a U.S. tax resident. Participants will learn the two major decisions that such couples need to make while identifying various strategies they can use to mitigate income and estate tax liabilities.
