Student Loan Repayment and Forgiveness Update
Course Information
Content Level: Advanced
NAPFA Subject Area: A-Financial Planning Process
Course Description
During the nearly 22-month National Forbearance period, changes were made to the student loan repayment and forgiveness rules. The new rules include a tax-free employer student loan reimbursement, multiple extensions impacting income recertification, and a new Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Limited Waiver Program.

On May 1, 2022, borrowers will need to restart their loan repayments. This webinar will explain how to navigate the PSLF Limited Waiver rules and how it will impact individual clients and the advisors who manage company retirement plans.
Learning Objectives
  1. Learn how to plan for the new repayment and forgiveness rules, including proper tax filing methods and management of clients’ AGI. Understanding this is important due to more borrowers using Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Methods.
  2. Understand the rules to navigate the new PSLF Limited Waiver Program, including loan consolidations and selecting a repayment method.
  3. Learn the proposed changes to company retirement contribution linked to student loan repayment under the Proposed SECURE Act 2.0.  SECURE Act 2.0 has gotten bipartisan support and is expected to pass in late 2021 or early 2022.
